Interviewer: One of the criticisms of Breaking Bad that keeps coming up is over the female characters. Skyler White is seen by some as this henpecking woman who stands in the way of all of Walt’s fun.
Vince Gilligan: Man, I don’t see it that way at all. We’ve been at events and had all our actors up onstage, and people ask Anna Gunn, “Why is your character such a bitch?” And with the risk of painting with too broad a brush, I think the people who have these issues with the wives being too bitchy on Breaking Bad are misogynists, plain and simple. I like Skyler a little less now that she’s succumbed to Walt’s machinations, but in the early days she was the voice of morality on the show. She was the one telling him, “You can’t cook crystal meth.” She’s got a tough job being married to this asshole. And this, by the way, is why I should avoid the Internet at all costs. People are griping about Skyler White being too much of a killjoy to her meth-cooking, murdering husband? She’s telling him not to be a murderer and a guy who cooks drugs for kids. How could you have a problem with that?

“When you talk about guns you always hear a lot about the Second Amendment and the Founding Fathers, and what they would say if they were here. Well, I for one think that if the Founding Fathers were here today, they would be super freaked out by cars. You can talk to them all you want about the Second Amendment, and they would just yell, ‘What are all these metal beasts doing rolling down the thoroughfare?’ And you’d tell them, ‘Those are cars’. And then you’d try to talk to them about militias and they would scream, ‘How can you speak of militias when steel dragons fly through the sky?’ And you’d say, ‘Those are airplanes.’ But even if they could wrap their heads around that they would eventually ask, ‘Why are all the slaves out?’ And they would think that. You can groan all you want, but they would think that.

And yes, the Founding Fathers wanted you to have the right to bear arms, but the guys who wrote that would pee through all eight layers of their pants if they saw what guns are now. In 1787 shooting a bullet was slightly faster than throwing one. If you wanted to be bulletproof in 1787 you put on a heavy coat. So with that in mind, I’m all about Americans having guns as long as they’re the muskets from 1787 that take forever to load.”

It’s late on a Friday night and your girlfriend is passed out on your shoulder, the full weight of her skull sliding awkwardly down your arm. Her hair completely covers her face, but I get glimpses of her red lipstick; she’s Cousin It, but sexier.

Maybe she’s had too much to drink, or maybe she’s exhausted after a long week of work doing whatever young, attractive people do in the city. You just sit there stoically, a guitar case between your legs, protecting her while she naps in front of forty strangers.

Is it forty? Who knows. I was never good at numbers.

How nice, I think, to have someone to fall asleep on in public. If I succumbed to my constant sleepiness, my head would just fall back onto the disgusting train seat and I’d wake up at Coney Island. My phone would surely be gone, and probably my bag, too. But it takes a certain level of trust to use someone as a pillow, and that usually means that person is also privy to everything about you, the nasty truth behind your mystery. He sees the strange things you read on the Internet, the unhealthy things you eat for dinner, the questionable amount of alcohol you drink each night. He sees you clean the apartment in your underwear and hears you use pet names on your actual pet. He knows what you really watch on television, which embarrassing DVDs you own, which books you read and read and read again. He knows what makes you cry, and who has time for that kind of thing, really?

Still, you two look nice together. It makes me want to find a companionable shoulder of my own.

You start to stir as your stop approaches, grip tightening on the guitar case. I wait for you to brush the hair off your girlfriend’s face, whisper something in her ear to wake her up. “Honey, it’s our stop,” you’ll say. “Time to get up.” Instead, you stand, and her head jerks up for a moment before she’s fully asleep again. I see now that she has headphones on, completely oblivious as you walk off and leave her behind.

Oh, I think dumbly. You didn’t know each other at all. Her iPod falls from her hand and dangles freely, up for grabs, and another stranger takes your place.
